Located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on Luzon, the country's largest island, Manila is considered one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. You can still see traces of the Spanish who controlled the area for more than 3 centuries. Today the city of 1.5 million inhabitants thrives as an important cultural and economic center.

Attractions not to miss include Intramuros, located along the banks of the Pasig River, the oldest district of Manila. A city/fortress built by the Spanish, it was considered Manila itself at one point. Fuerza de Santiago was a defense fortress (now a museum) and is part of the structure of the walled city. Here, dungeons and old churches share space with art galleries, theaters and a nature park. Also located within the Intramuros is San Agustin Church, the oldest stone church in Manila, and one of four Philippine Baroque Churches inscribed in UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Rizal Park is 148 acres and is considered the country's most significant park and should not be missed. Attractions in the park include the Planetarium, the Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion, free concerts, museums, Chinese and Japanese Gardens, chess plaza, children's lagoon and much more. For breathtaking sunsets, visit the promenade at Baywalk that is in front of Manila Bay. Coconut trees, al fresco cafes and restaurants and live bands line this over l mile walkway.

The Manila nightlife offers everything from cultural shows to new age discos, lively casinos for gambling, entertainment lounges and fashionable cafes. The popular districts of Malate and Ermita feature a wide variety of restaurants, clubs, bars, cafes, art and antique shops. Both the districts offer great shopping, including the handicrafts of different regions. There are numerous shopping complexes from modern air conditioned department stores to open air bazaars.
