The Davao Region is located in southeastern Mindanao, the regional center being Davao City, one of the largest cities in the world by land mass. The region encloses Davao Gulf and is comprised of three districts, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur. The tallest mountain in the Philippines, Mt. Apo (more than 10,000 feet above sea level) lies on the region's boundaries. Terrain includes vast plains, fertile valleys, navigable rivers, unspoiled forests and world-class beaches facing the Davao Gulf. Davao is located in a typhoon-free zone and the tropical weather is mild year round, with temperatures ranging from about 59 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Davao City and Metropolitan Davao has been recognized by Asiaweek magazine as one of the 20 most livable cities in Asia and the number 1 most livable city in the Philippines. The city has several unofficial titles because of the wonders of the natural world that can be found there - "Orchid Capital of the Philippines" for the beautiful Waling-Waling orchids that grow in abundance at the foot of Mt. Apo; "Fruit Basket of the Philippines" for the exotic durian as well as fresh watermelons, mangos, pomelos, rambutan, bananas, strawberries, pineapples, avocados and more; and "The Home of the Great Bird of Asia", the Philippine Eagle, one of the largest eagles in the world.

Public transportation in Davao (like many other places in the Philippines) includes jeepneys, tricycles and taxicabs. There is an abundance of shopping centers in Davao City, including NCCC Mall of Davao, SM City Davao, G-Mall (Gaisano Mall of Davao), Victoria Plaza Mall, Felcris Department Stores and more. There are also many bars and discos, although visitors should note that a strict 2 a.m. curfew dictated by city ordinance applies to all business establishments. Smoking is also strictly prohibited.

Travel Advisory: Any U.S. citizens traveling to the Philippines, particularly the southern island of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, should consider the risks to their safety and security while visiting, including those due to terrorism. Travelers should exercise extreme caution in western and central Mindanao and in all areas of the Sulu Archipelago.

Gangs who kidnap individuals for ransom money (such as the New People's Army or NPA) operate in the Philippines. A U.S. citizen kidnapped in October 2007 has still not been located. Terrorist groups such as the Abu Sayyaf Group, Jema'ah Islamiyah and other groups who have broken away from the more mainstream Moro Islamic Liberation Front or Moro National Liberation Front are responsible for bombings that have resulted in deaths, injuries and property damage; the most recent deadly attack was on January 3, 2008. Central and western areas of Mindanao have seen bombings targeting bus terminals and other public buildings.
