This charming, European-style boutique hotel is located in the heart of San Francisco right on Union Square.
The hotel is family owned, now in the 3rd generation.
In 1948, Harry Handlery purchased the Stewart Hotel, where rooms went for $4 a night and most guests shared bathrooms at the end of the hall.
For every three rooms, he remodeled them into two with bathrooms.
Then in 1964 his son built the Handlery Motor Inn with a beautiful courtyard and outdoor heated swimming pool,
the first in downtown San Francisco.
Finally Henry's grandson combined the two properties with a $10 million renovation and connected the two via the courtyard.
Henry's grandson, Jon, overlooks the day-to-day operations,
ensuring the hotel runs as smoothly as in the time of his grandfather and it is the guests who reap all the benefits of all this family history and experience.
There are 284 newly redecorated guestrooms in the Historic Section, with beautiful custom furniture and wonderful fabrics and décor.
The amenities include cable TV, internet access and much more.
The Club Section features all the amenities of the Historic Section plus more,
with 93 oversized clubs rooms many of which have balconies and offer either a City or Pool view.
The club rooms, about 450 sq. ft., are furnished elegantly with an ambiance and spaciousness hard to resist.
The Handlery offers all their guests complimentary use of the heated outdoor swimming pool as well as their sauna facilities. There is a multi-lingual concierge staff, on-site Valet parking at reduced rates with unlimited in-and-out privileges, a good old fashioned barbershop, baby-sitting services and room service from 7 am to 7 pm.
The Daily Grill is an extremely popular Los Angeles restaurant chain's first San Francisco location.
Adjacent to The Handlery, the Daily Grill is a popular place to meet on Union Square for breakfast, lunch, dinner or cocktails.
For the convenience of the hotel's guest, there is a separate entrance right off the hotel for the restaurant.
The Daily Grill is reminiscent of some of the great grills of the past, serving large portions, always cooked to order,
using only the freshest ingredients. Their signature dish? A chicken pot pie that everyone raves about.
This is simply a lovely hotel, with beautifully furnished rooms, impeccable service, a perfect location for shopping, the theatre or hopping on a Cable Car for a ride to the city's famous Wharf for some seafood snacking. Then there is the fact that the hotel is located in one of America's most beautiful cities, with its bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, the hills, the architecture, fabulous museums and even the fog. It can't get better than this.
