Description

Often compared to New York and Paris as one of the most exciting, fascinating cities in the world, Tokyo is a marvelous blend of modern high-tech and ancient traditions. The city dates back to about 1600 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu picked the small fishing village of Edo near the mouth of the Sumida River as the Shogunate's new capital. It eventually became Tokyo and Japan's capital from 1868. Considered the center of the country's culture, arts and music, this cosmopolitan city should not be missed. There is Tokyo Disneyland for the whole family; museums of all sorts; the largest fish market in the world, Tsukiji Fish Market, for morning sushi; literally thousands of small sushi and tempura stalls for a quick, delicious snack; a wonderful zoo; the massive public park Shinjuku Gyoen with its beautiful cherry and plum trees; the theme park of Korakuen, home to the Tokyo Dome where the Tokyo Giants play their home games.

For the best choices in electronics and cameras you must visit the Akihabara area - they offer the very latest in everything - items that won't be on the shelves in New York for another year or so. Roppongi Hills, Harajuku, Ginza and Odaiba areas are all worth a visit, as well as Daikanyama, one of Tokyo's hippest neighborhoods with great boutiques and lots of cafes. Make time to see the Meiji Shrine adjacent to Yoyogi Park. Although a relatively new shrine, built in 1920, it is the most famous Shinto shrine in Japan. Although you cannot go into the Imperial Palace, it is regarded as the heart and soul of not only Tokyo, but Japan. Built on the remains of Edo Castle, the grounds provide a beautiful open space for the city and Higashi Gyoen, once the site of Edo Castle's keep, is open to the public. Along the moat in springtime, you can enjoy the blossoming of the cherry trees...a marvelous sight. Tokyo has everything conceivable you might desire from superb international restaurants, cafes and bars to traditional Japanese theatre such as Noh and Kabuki. Tokyo is truly a marvelous city and a perfectly magical blend of the old and the new.
