Sendai City is situated in the center of the Miyagi Prefecture and is one of Japan's fastest growing areas and one of the most pleasant cities in the country. The coastline is absolutely stunning at Matsushima Bay. Rated by the Japanese as one of the top three scenic wonders in Japan, the Bay is filled with over 260 pine-covered islands. On the other side of the Prefecture are the mountains, famous for their hot springs (onsens). It is a relatively new castle town dating from the time of Date Masamune who reigned over the district and built the Aoba Castle in the 1600's. Destroyed in the war, the ruins have been transformed into a park for the people of the city.
But it is Sendai City that takes center stage. It is simply a beautiful city, well planned with parks and museums and so much to see and do. The main street of Sendai, which is known as "The City of Trees", is Aoba-dori Street which is lined with rows of Zelkova trees. They delight the eye with their fresh green leaves in spring and scarlet-tinged leaves in autumn, but in winter they truly shine with thousands of lights strung on them in a Christmas illumination. Higashi Ichibancho-dori Avenue is the place to shop, with local markets, many restaurants and shops galore. Things not to miss include the museum, Masamune's mausoleum, Jozenji Street, lined not only with trees, but sculptures and a visit to one of the nearby hot springs such as Akiu-onsen or Sakunami-onsen. Whatever you choose to do, don't miss the opportunity to visit this absolutely charming city.
