Description

Sapporo is located on the island of Hokkaido in the North and is the fifth largest city in Japan and the island's business and commercial center. Originally inhabited by the Ainu, the aborigines of Hokkaido, the Japanese did not settle in the area until the mid 1800s. Sapporo, host of the l972 Winter Olympics, is a very modern, cosmopolitan city with many things to do and see. Visitors from around the world attend the annual International Snow Festival where huge replicas of world famous architecture are made from snow as well as beautifully created ice sculptures. There are wonderful museums with renowned collections and activities for the whole family, from skiing, snowboarding and skating to hiking, cycling, canoeing and white-water rafting depending on the season. Some of the most famous hot springs (onsens) are within driving distance of Sapporo and, of course, there are the mountains wherever you look.

During the summer there is the annual Pacific Music Festival and during the winter months the White Illumination when Sapporo's main street and Odori Park are decorated with millions of small lights on all the trees as well as light sculptures creating a fantasy that is simply breathtaking. There are seven ski areas within the city boundaries, some of which feature floodlit night skiing and stunning views of the city below. For nightlife, check out the Susukino area where there are thousands of restaurants, bars and clubs. There is also great shopping available including the Nijo Market and shops selling Ainu wood-carvings and jewelry. Hokkaido is famous for their seafood and Sapporo restaurants take advantage of this, specializing in a seafood stew called Ishikari-nabe and their famous Genghis Kahn, a lamb barbeque. To wash all that food down, don’t forget the Sapporo Beer – and take some time to visit the Sapporo Beer Hall, a former brewery, located in a beautiful old red brick building.
