Once known as the Venice of the East for its network of canals, Osaka is Japans third largest city. Historically it was the merchant capital of the country and is now the economic heart of western Japan. It is an exciting, lively, fun place to both live and visit. The northern part of the city contains the main business district with the southern area home to entertainment, shopping and nightlife. There is a flamboyant fashion center with a style all it's own, many museums, professional soccer and baseball teams and unbelievable shopping centers, both underground and above ground.
Things not to miss include Shitennoji Temple dating back to the 6th century and one of the oldest temples in the country, the National Bunraku Theater – Japanese puppet theatre that became popular in Osaka from the 17th century on and the Osaka Aquarium, which is considered one of Japans best, featuring 15 Pacific Ocean tanks. The Osaka Castle dates from the early 16th century and sits amid a large park which also includes a museum and a concert hall as well as the Open Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses, 11 thatched-roof buildings from all over Japan. Osaka has a reputation for being a gourmet city that not only includes classical Japanese food but foods from around the world and there are hundreds and hundreds of dining options.
