Okinawa consists of almost 150 islands scattered over a wide area south of the main islands of Japan. Okinawa was an independent kingdom called Ryukyu in the 15th century and to this day still has kept its traditions from the former kingdom including their art, music and language. The largest island, Okinawa, has many wonderful things to see beginning with Shuri-jo Castle Park. Located atop a small hill, the castle is part of the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom, who had developed as a seafaring country through trade and diplomatic ties with Japan, Korea, China and Southeast Asia. The castle is registered as a World Heritage Site and with its location offers a stunning view of the surrounding area. It is surrounded by a beautiful park and the rebuilt castle itself is a mixture of both Japanese and Chinese architecture.
With its subtropical climate, it is a favorite destination spot for many visitors from Japan as well as other parts of Asia. The crystal blue sea and white sand beaches are beautiful, the coral reefs perfect for snorkeling and the waters home to a myriad of sea life, including playful whales from January to April. The main city of Naha has luxury hotels, a main street called Kokusai-dori Avenue, which is lined with souvenir shops, movie theatres, department stores and restaurants. Located on Main Market Street, the Makishi Public Market should not be missed. Another worth while visit would be to Gyokusen-do, one of the largest limestone caves in Japan. Located in the Gyokusendo Kingdom Villa cultural theme park besides the cave, there is a villa, huts and Okinawan crafts and art. If possible, visit one of the other islands, inhabited or not, do some snorkeling and simply enjoy a wonderful spot on the planet.
