Nagoya is one of Japan's major cities and the home of Toyoto, the country's largest company. It is a well planned community with wide streets and lovely neighborhoods. There is also Inuyama, considered to be the most beautiful castle in Japan, located on the Kiso River, compared often to the Rhine River of Germany. Centrally located between Tokyo and Osaka, Nagoya is also only about 70 miles from Shirakawa, widely known as one of the most scenic places in all of Japan. With its wooden houses and narrow streets, this is a typical town from 200 years ago. Nestled in the foothills of the Japan Alps, this beautiful area and town are well worth a side trip. You can also take a day trip to Mikimoto Island, where you can watch the pearl divers.
If you are adventurous, ride the rapids on the Kiso River in flat-bottomed boats guided by oarsmen. Visit the Noritake China and Ando Cloisonne factories, or for something quite unusual, go to the Japan Monkey Park where over 1,000 different monkeys from around the world are on display. Nagoya is home to one of the largest zoos in Asia, which also includes a botanical garden and amusement park. Then there is the Aquarium with underwater tunnels for fantastic viewing. Held on the 18th and 28th of every month, regardless of weather, the Osu Flea Market is great for browsing and the place to buy something unusual. Nagoya Castle, completely rebuilt after the war, is well worth a visit as are the many museums in the city. There is professional soccer and baseball to enjoy and like all of Japan's large cities, the choice of dining is large with every ethnic group represented.
