Kyoto is one of Japan's most beautiful cities. It was the ancient capital and the home of the emperors from 794 to 1868. Roughly one out of four of Japan's National Treasures can be found in Kyoto as well as 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nestled in forested hills, the city has countless shrines, temples, gardens and thousands of wood buildings that have lasted for hundreds of years. It has been said that like Paris and Venice, Kyoto is a city best experienced on foot. Stroll along the tree-lined streets or wander along the river bank and listen to the sounds of temple bells ringing and you can almost imagine yourself back in the time of the samurai, Shoguns and Emperors.
Things not to miss include Nijo Castle, built in 1603 for the first Tokugawa Shogun; the Imperial Palace; Ginkakuji temple and, the most popular attraction in the city, the Kinkakuji or Golden Pavilion. The pavilion is 3 stories, covered in gold leaf that glitters in the pond that surrounds it. Then there is the Gion district, a great place to visit, especially when the cherry trees are in bloom. There are wonderful restaurants of all types throughout the city from simple, inexpensive noodle shops to elegant French restaurants. For a fascinating shopping experience, don't miss the Toji and Kitano Tenmangu antiques markets.
