Hiroshima was founded in 1589 by the feudal lord, Terumoto Mori and once served as a garrison town for the Imperial army. Rebuilt as a modern, open city after the war, Hiroshima faces the Seto Inland Sea which is dotted with a myriad of beautiful islands. There are six rivers that flow through the city, mountains behind it and the ever changing four seasons. The city has overcome the tragedy of the war and has become internationally known as a city of peace. Not to be missed is the Peace Memorial Museum, Peace Park and the A-Bomb Dome, the only building to have survived the bomb.
There are many parks throughout the city, including the wonderful Asa Zoological Park with animals from around the world, particularly from Asia and Africa. It's in a beautiful park-like setting and perfect for a picnic. Hiroshima also is well known for its food, including oysters. They have been culturing oysters since 1673; then there is the delicious okonomi-yaki, unique flour crepes fried with vegetables and noodles, a specialty of the town. Another must-see is Shukukei-en Garden, a miniature scenery garden that is a delight to see. If you like beer, don't miss the Beer Museum in the historic Sapporo Brewery for a tour which ends with tasting. And finally, for pictures and memories you won't forget visit the romantic island of Miyajima, about eight miles off the coast. It is a beautiful island with a famous shrine featuring a massive red wooden torii (gate). Since the shrine was built over water, at high tide it appears to be floating, an unbelievable sight. Hiroshima is a lovely city and one well worth visiting.
