Located on the northern coast of the island of Kyushu, Fukuoka is an energetic and cosmopolitan city which is expanding rapidly. Historically split by the Nakagawa River between the castle town of Fukuoka and the merchant quarter of Hakata, it is becoming one of Japan's most dynamic and livable cities. One of the most recent buildings is Canal City Hakata, a futuristic development designed by an American architect that features multi-screen cinema, bars, hotels, restaurants and shops.
Things not to miss include Kushida Shrine, founded in 757. It is located in the heart of ancient Hakata and it is said that the huge gingko tree shading the shrine’s forecourt is at least 1,000 years old. Fukuoka Castle is no longer standing, but the grounds now form the city’s largest park, where an Art Gallery is located with painting by Chagall, Miro and contemporary Japanese artists. Momochi Seaside Park is a man-made beach with a pier packed with restaurants, shops and cafes. The Tenjin area has the city’s most popular nightspots along Oyafukudori and some lively shopping at the ACROS building next to Chuo Park. As with all the large cities in Japan, there is a wide selection of dining options from a casual pizza to an elegant sit down dinner by candlelight.
