The city of Montreal is located on Montreal Island, surrounded by the St. Lawrence River and Riviere des Prairies in the province of Quebec. The second largest metropolitan area in Canada after Toronto, Montreal is a center of culture, commerce, finance and industry. The harbor on the St. Lawrence Seaway is one of Canada's most important ports, connecting the city to the great industrial centers of the Great Lakes. Montreal also has an extensive underground railway system called the Metro.
Montreal is located at the foot of Mt. Royal (the city's namesake), which is surrounded by Mt. Royal Park, a large wooded area where you can bike, rollerblade, toboggan, jog, ski, or bird watch - something to do in every season. To the south is the area called Old Montreal; stroll down Place Jaques-Cartier, a street named after the French explorer who arrived back in the 1500s, take in the fantastic views from the boardwalk at Old Port, or gaze in awe at the architecture of the towering Notre Dame Basilica.
You can walk amongst butterflies and see lush plant life at the Botanical Gardens, meet otters, monkeys, penguins and more at the Biodome, or sort through bugs at the Insectarium. There are also several museums to explore, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Arts and an Environmental Museum. If the arts are of interest to you, the Place des Arts is a complex of concert and theatre halls surrounding a large square in downtown where you can enjoy opera, orchestra, live theatre, ballet and more.
Downtown Montreal is also the location of the Underground City, a series of protected indoor pedestrian tunnels built above and below street level that are lined with shops. The passages connect to hotels, banks, offices, shopping malls, Metro and commuter train stations, museums and universities. Shoppers shouldn't miss St. Catherine Street, a popular shopping destination with several major retailers and home to some of Montreal's most prominent shopping complexes.
When dining in Montreal, you can find everything from elegant five-star restaurants to comfortable eateries, brasseries, cafes and bistros, all featuring cuisine with influences from France, Italy, Latin America, Asia and Continental Europe. Enjoy fresh from the oven bagels, a classic smoked meat sandwich, or a mountain of poutine - French fries topped with fresh cheese curds and brown gravy (a dish so popular that its mass produced by local fast food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King).
Montreal's nightlife usually stretches into the early hours of the morning, with most bars and clubs closing at 3 a.m. and a network of night buses replacing the Metro between the hours of 1 and 5 a.m. Crescent Street is nightlife central for Montreal's tourist population, a place for street fairs and festivals all throughout the summer months. Boulevard Saint-Laurent (called "The Main" by locals) is another spot with many bars and nightclubs playing a wide variety of music, from Top 40, electronica and techno to live bands, underground and alternative rock.
