Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta, approximately 50 miles east from the Canadian Rockies. With several popular mountain resorts nearby, the city is a popular destination for winter sports and ecotourism, but is also a great place to attend one of many annual festivals, including the Calgary Stampede, Calgary International Film Festival, Lilac Festival, Greek Festival, WordFest Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival and many, many more.
From the Downtown Commercial Core with its entertainment, art and retail districts to exotic Chinatown and Little Italy, Calgary is a modern and cosmopolitan city with over 180 distinct neighborhoods. The charm of the old west is also maintained with classic hotel saloons, western bars and night clubs. Most of Downtown Calgary is easily accessible via the efficient C-Train light rail transit system.
A sight not to miss is the Devonian Gardens, a 2.5-acre climate controlled indoor park with more than 20,000 plants representing 135 tropical and local species, a permanent exhibit of local sculpture and artwork, waterfalls, koi and turtle pools, fountains and bridges. You can also visit the animals at the Calgary Zoo, browse the exhibits at the Glenbow Museum, or take in a wide variety of theatrical performances, from live theatre to symphonic music, at the EPCOR Centre for Performing Arts.
For outdoor adventurers, the Canada Olympic Park is a large facility for cross-country skiing, ski jumping, downhill skiing, snowboarding and even a few summer sports. You can also try fly-fishing in the Bow River, or take a jog through one of many urban parks, Nose Hill Park being the largest municipal park in Canada. Golfing is another popular activity for Calgarians, with a large number of courses located in the region.
Shoppers should make for the Core Shopping Centre, a large mall located at TD Square that features popular brands such as Urban, Henry Singer, Holt Renfrew and Harry Rosen. South of Downtown is the area known as Beltline, known for its many shopping venues, nightclubs, restaurants and bars. There are also several suburban shopping centers in Calgary, including the Chinook Centre, Southcentre Mall, Signal Hill, Southtrail Crossing, Deerfoot Meadows and many more.
If you're looking for something to eat, you can find almost any type of cuisine you might be craving, including French, Greek, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Caribbean and more. Dine on everything from Beef Bourguignon and Grilled Paninis to Pad Thai and Freshly Rolled Sushi. You can definitely find something for every taste and budget in Calgary.
One of the biggest events in Calgary is the annual Calgary Stampede, a celebration of cowboys and western traditions and culture. Enjoy more than a week of fantastic entertainment, including the Calgary Stampede Rodeo with exciting events such as bull and bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, ladies barrel racing and much more. Don't miss the chuckwagon races or other fun competitions like stock dog, blacksmith and tractor pulling.
Midway Entertainment brings thrilling rides, fun carnival games and a huge variety of food and snacks to the event, including standard fare like corn dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, pretzels, burgers, chili, pizza and French fries along with many barbeque and western favorites. Kids will love the Buckaroos children entertainment area with games, activities and entertainment. The Calgary Stampede will be held this year from July 4 to July 13, 2008.
