London, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Dublin, St. Petersburg, Zurich, Barcelona, Berlin, Athens, Lisbon, Vienna - the names of Europe's great cities evoke all sorts of emotions. For many Americans it is where their ancestors came from and for others, Europe is a land of ancient history with the opportunity to wander cobblestone streets in towns that were built in the 1500's and to touch buildings that have survived for thousands of years.
For others it is the art that brings them to Europe. To see Michelangelo's Pieta or David in person, to see the genius of Goya, Velazquez, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Botticelli, Raphael or Titian is an unbelievable experience for those who love art.
Then there is the sheer beauty of Europe - The southern countries with their olive and lemon groves, fields of lavender, vineyards and slower pace of living; the beautiful forests of the northern countries and the Northern Lights; the towering Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees; the lakes and the rivers from the Rhine to the Volga and the Danube to the Loire; and most important of all, the people. Every country in Europe has its own special beauty and history and its own special culture and cuisine.
Why travel to Europe? The better question is always the same. Why Not? Travel is enlightening, educational and broadens almost everyone's attitude and stereotypes of things that are different. Learn new things, meet new people, take great pictures and come home with not only wonderful memories but a broader understanding of the world around you. Now, what could be better than that?
