Las Vegas is popularly known as a destination that is all about the gambling, dining, spectacular live shows and glitzy hotels. Many of us forget about the vast stretches of desert, canyons and lakes outside the city limits. With the weather cooling down in the fall, why not challenge the maze of ledges, ramps, chutes, gullies and mountains at the Red Rock Canyon, relax in a hot spring and watch hawks soar overhead around Lake Mead, or scale the cool slopes of Mt. Charleston? Be sure to always hike in groups, as many Las Vegas trails can be very challenging.
For the less athletically ambitious, if you don't mind a good long drive, cross the Hoover Dam, the magnificent man-made wonder that harnesses the immense power of the Colorado River, on your way to one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world, the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Of course, casino, restaurant and show goers need not be discouraged; even without a long weekend, Las Vegas is one of the most happening entertainment destinations in the United States.
