Alan Wong's has been voted Best Restaurant for 12 years by residents of Hawaii; the restaurant placed 8th in Gourmet Magazine's Top 50 Restaurants in America; just one of its many national awards and recognition. If you want an unforgettable meal while visiting Hawaii, make reservations in advance for an experience you'll never forget. It is expensive, but the food is exquisite as well as the presentation. One of the original founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, Alan Wong has taken fusion food to the top of the field with his appetizer choices including Crispy Won Ton Ahi Poke Balls on Avocado with Wasabi Sauce, Seafood Cakes with lobster, shrimp, crab and scallops with caper mayonnaise and Tsukemono relish or your could try the Hoisin Plum BBQ Ribs, absolutely delicious or opt for the delightful Chinatown Roast Duck Nacho. The greens in the salad choices taste as though they were just picked moments before arriving at your table with one of the best (there is no bad at this restaurant), the Hamakua Springs Tomato, Beet and Avocado Salad.
Entrees include an incredible, perfectly cooked, Ginger Crusted Onaga, (Long-tail Red Snapper) with a Miso Sesame Vinaigrette, Hamakua mushrooms and corn or try the addictive Steamed Bowl of Shellfish (you'll remember this dish for a long time to come) with Dungeness Crab, Scallops, Lobster, Calamari and Clams in a Bouillabaisse-style broth with roasted garlic smashed potatoes - it's so popular, if you dine later in the evening, they might be sold out. Then there is the Kona Coffee Crusted Maui Cattle Company Striploin with roasted vegetables, Big Island Goat Cheese mashed potatoes and roasted garlic jus - a carnivore's dream. Available nightly is a 5- or 7-course Menu Tasting with wine pairings available.
Save room for desserts because you won't want to miss the Five spoonfuls of Brulees, the Apple Pie & Cheddar Cheese featuring a caramelized Golden Delicious Apple Tart, Caramel Lumpia and Vermont White Cheddar Sorbet and the evening might not be complete without a taste of The Coconut with Haupia Sorbet in a Chocolate shell, tropical fruits and Lilikoi Sauce. Coffee drinkers are offered 100% single estate coffees, served in a French Press from the various Hawaiian Islands.
This is, without a doubt, one of the very finest restaurants in Hawaii, a state with dozens and dozens of 5-star restaurants. It stands out because of the attention to detail, to the melding of spices and flavors to create memorable dishes, to the staff that are knowledgeable and provide such wonderful, unobtrusive service and to the entire ambiance of Alan Wong's Restaurant. It's a little slice of food heaven. Open for dinner from 5 to 10 pm daily. Valet parking. Reservations in advance highly recommended.
