La Provence is truly a hidden gem in one of the most beautiful parts of Maui - Upcountry. Even though the address is Lower Kula Road, it is actually above Kula Highway (the road to Mt. Haleakala) which might be the reason it is mentioned in none of the recommended dining magazines. And what a shame that is because Chef Thierry Michelier creates some of the most wonderful French cuisine in a setting that is both whimsical and magical - as is his food. Local residents of the Kula area swarm his small bakery/kitchen for the flaky croissants and his wonderful quiches for take out. And on weekends, they are willing to wait a long time for one of the patio tables outside and even the ones that are covered. There is no indoor seating, instead, half the patio is covered and the other half has tables with umbrellas and views that are stunning looking down the slope of the mountain.

But it is the food that keeps people returning and it is simply fabulous. Close your eyes and you could be in Paris as you bite into one of his croissants and sip on a cappuccino, one of the best you'll ever had (unless you've spent a lot of time in Italy lately), served in a large cup at a ridiculously low price. The Sunday brunch menu features great Eggs Benedict including the classics and varieties including salmon and fish of the day, served with excellent roasted potatoes. You can also try the stuffed Crepes, fluffy quiches or a basket of melt-in-your mouth French pastries. They are open seasonally for dinner with all the classics on the menu, perfectly prepared by one of Hawaii's most wonderful chefs. The food is marvelous and the prices are unbelievably low. The only caveat is, be prepared to wait, perhaps a long time, especially if you want a table on the open patio - but also be prepared to have the most wonderful brunch in a magical place you might never forget. Open Wed. to Sun from 7 am to 9 pm.
