Maui Hawaiian Vacation: Historical Spots

Maui’s rich history and unique folklore leads back to around 1,000 AD when the Polynesians first sailed to the Hawaiian Islands. Today, visitors have an opportunity to learn about the Island’s deep roots by exploring its many historical sites. Whether you enjoy visiting educational museums or authentic archeological sites, Maui offers a wide range of historical locations to choose from that suit every type of traveler and budget. To make the most out of your Hawaiian vacation in Maui, don’t forget to add the following historical sites to your itinerary.
The first historical places worth seeing are the Halekii and Pijana State Monuments. Both sites include the remains of a Hawaiian temple, or heiau. Historians suggest that the Hawaiians performed human sacrifices on some of these temples. Many temples were also known as places of refuge from danger. These two archeological sites are very easy to reach and offer stunning views of the Wailuku and Kahului communities. If hiking and exploring is on your list of things to do in Maui, you will love the walk to Olowalu Petroglyphs. A dirt road will take you to a large mound of volcanic rock, where the 300 year-old petroglyphs have been carved. There are over one hundred human and stick figures that depict royalty, commoners, and animals. Hawaiian vacations are also fun when a few museums are added to your schedule. You can visit the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum that exhibits the history of Maui’s sugar industry. It is located next to the largest sugar factory in Hawaii. Or, you can visit the free Whalers Village Whaling Museum that is all about life at sea in the 1800s. The museum features whaling artifacts, photographs, and scrimshaw. It is set on the stunning Kaanapali Beach near many other fine shops and restaurants.
