Kauai is not only the oldest island in the Hawaiian Island chain, but it is believed it was the first island to be inhabited. The Marquesa Islanders arrived in about 400 A.D. About 600 years later the Tahitians discovered the islands and eventually integrated with the Marquesans. The ability to sail over 2,600 miles in an open outrigger canoe with no navigational aids, except the stars and handed down ancestral chants remains one of the greatest feats in naval history.

Kauai is also the only island not conquered by King Kamehameha. In 1796 after he conquered Maui and Oahu, he planned to attack Kauai and failed due to bad weather. In 1804 he tried again, sending 900 outrigger canoes and 10,000 warriors, but this time a cholera epidemic decimated his army. Eventually the King of Kauai signed a treaty which allowed Kamehameha to unite all the islands in one kingdom - without ever conquering Kauai.

Nicknamed The Garden Isle, it is simply one of the loveliest spots on earth. Famed for its unparalleled beauty, it is home to one of the wettest area in the world (Mt. Waialeale), the 3,567-foot deep Waimea Canyon (referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific) and the 3,000-foot high cliffs that rise from the ocean floor to form the magnificent Na Pali Coast.

It also has the only navigable river in Hawaii, 43 white sand beaches, more beach per mile of coastline than the other islands, the largest coffee plantation and the film location for more than 60 major motion pictures. From Opaeka'a and Wailua Falls to Hanalei and the amazing wet and dry caves of Ha'ena, it is a stunningly beautiful island. There is the Princeville area with its luxury resorts, Hanalei Bay and scenery that will take your breath away. Be sure to visit the charming town of Kapa'a with its boutiques and variety of restaurants, or drive through the tree tunnel and visit the historic Old Koloa Town.

For those who want to get away from the crowds, have the opportunity to hike in beautiful surroundings, kayak up the Wailua River, then hike to a waterfall or see the Fern Grotto and basically experience nature at its finest, see more than you thought existed in the universe, then come to Kauai - come to Paradise.
