Sydney Opera

You might not be the biggest fan of operas or operettas (a lighter version of an opera), but to experience one in one of the most famous and beautiful opera houses in the world is simply unforgettable. Similar to seeing an opera at the Milan Opera House, it is very, very special, almost regardless of which opera you are seeing.

But if you are not into opera whatsoever, the Sydney Opera House is also home to all sorts of concerts from the latest pop stars, to jazz festivals, country and everything in between. There is also the symphony, the ballet, dance troupes and so much more happening on an almost daily basis at this most beautiful of venues. For a full line up of events taking place, go to www.sydneyoperahouse.com/. Below is a sampling of some of the winter season's upcoming operas and one classic operetta.

Lakme
Cultures collide, generations are at war and lovers fall irresistibly, helplessly, hopelessly in love. You can almost smell the jasmine in Delibes' lush vision of Southern India, peopled by mystical princesses, peasants and Brahmins, well-meaning officers of the British Army and even a few gods.
July 5 to 29, 2006
La Clemenza Di Tito
Mozart, although impoverished and beset by illness, jumps at the chance to celebrate a forthcoming coronation in Bohemia and completes the opera in just 18 days. It is the masterpiece, La Clemenza di Tito that takes place in Rome 79 AD and tells of Sesto, the brave but naive warrior who is persuaded by love-crazed Vitellia to kill the Emperor Tito.
August 2 to November 4, 2006
The Pirates of Penzance
Lock up your daughters, the pirates are coming to town! Peppered with unforgettable melodies and tongue-twisting songs, The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most popular operettas ever written.
